At the core of DREAM’s language arts curriculum is the belief that children learn to read and write best by reading and writing. To appropriately challenge and support each student, DREAM applies the Balanced Literacy approach, based on the work of Marie Clay. This method is designed to help educators meet the individual needs of each student within a general classroom setting alongside their classmates.

DREAM classrooms work within a workshop format where teachers plan lessons based on assessments of students’ reading and writing abilities.

Workshops include:

  • Shared reading and shared writing
  • Read-alouds
  • Interactive writing
  • Small group guided reading and writing lessons
  • Focused independent reading and writing

“The goal of our academic program is to develop critical thinkers who are actively engaged in their own learning.”
